Autumn Evening Talks from the Criminal Law Week and the CBA

Calling all junior members of the Bar:

Criminal Law Week and the Criminal Bar Association will be holding an online series of evening talks in Autumn 2024, given by leading experts on topics relevant to the everyday practice of junior barristers.

All talks take place at 18.00hrs on Zoom.

Wednesday 2nd October 2024 – Maya Sikand KC, Nathan Rasiah KC and Mark Gatley KC.

‘The Court is ready for you now… a practitioner’s practical guide to the early years in the Crown Court ’

Maya Sikand KC is a member of Doughty Street Chambers, a founding board member of Just for Kids Law, has sat as a Recorder since 2018 and is a member of the Criminal Law Week commentary board.

Maya Sikand KC now focuses on Public Law, in particular, Civil Liberties and Human Rights (she was shortlisted by Legal 500 for Public Law Silk of the Year in 2023 and Civil Liberties and Human Rights Junior of the Year in 2020) having previously also incorporated criminal law into her practice. Maya has forged a particular niche is acting on behalf of victims of trafficking and modern slavery charged with criminal offences, overturning their convictions as well as securing both HRA and statutory compensation on their behalf.

Maya is ranked in both Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500.

Nathan Rasiah KC is a member of 23 Essex Street, an advocacy trainer for Inner Temple and a member of the Criminal Law Week commentary board.

Nathan Rasiah KC acts for both the defence and the prosecution; instructed in complex and high-profile cases requiring specialist advice, including homicide, sexual offences, organised crime and terrorism, and corporate and business crime. In 2022, successfully prosecuted James Watson at the Old Bailey for the murder of 6-year-old Rikki Neave in 1994.

Mark Gatley KC is a member of Garden Court Chambers and assisted in setting up their mentor scheme ‘Access to the Bar for All”

Mark Gatley KC acts exclusively for the defence, specialising in serious and organised crime. Mark frequently receives instructions in high profile matters, his previous cases having included R v Norris – murder of Stephen Lawrence and R v Younis – the ‘freezer murderer’.

Mark is ranked in both Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500.
