Statement on CLAR – 15.12.21

The delayed Criminal Legal Aid Review has finally been revealed and is available to read here

We shall be examining the detail of the Independent Review’s findings and recommendations over the coming days. Our position on behalf of our members has been absolutely clear from the beginning of the CLAR enquiry: nothing less than a significant injection of new funding to make up the substantial decline in real incomes for the Criminal Bar will be sufficient to forestall the continuing haemorrhaging of prosecutors and defenders from the profession. It is from that perspective that we will be scrutinising the recommendations made in the report.
