Research Assistant – Grade 6 – Department of Sociology

Six hours per week for 12 months (01/01/25 to 30/12/25)

Working with Dr Nicole Renehan on an ESRC Impact Acceleration Account Project

I am looking to appoint a Research Assistant to work on an impact project to develop a Neurodiversity Toolkit that will enable Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Programme (DAPP) Practitioners to support neurodivergent clients accessing their service. The toolkit is being developed in collaboration with Research Partners, Respect (Make a Change Programme) and the North East Probation service (pending formal approval), and experts who: provide advocacy to neurodivergent people; develop and deliver neurodiversity training; and consult on neuro-inclusive service design. The resource will be piloted, evaluated, and refined, and the impact toolkit will be disseminated at a launch event.

This project is timely now that the Home Office Standards for Domestic Abuse Perpetrator Interventions (2023) make it incumbent on DAPP service providers to provide neurodiversity-affirmative provision. This impact project is the first of its kind, and the toolkit will be developed by building upon research undertaken with neurodivergent domestic abuse perpetrators, international DAPP Practitioners, and neurodivergent-led organisations.

The Research Assistant will work with Dr Nicole Renehan (and Research Partners across the NorthEast of England) during the toolkit development and pilot phases. Subject to capacity, the Research Assistant will also support other project activities, including write-up (e.g. a project report and journal article) and dissemination (e.g. end of project impact event). Some travel to delivery sites may be involved.

Specifically, the researcher will work alongside Dr Nicole Renehan on:

  • Project preparation including:

o   Writing an application for ethical approval

o   Developing and distributing Participant Information Sheets/consent forms

o   Developing material for online Action Learning Sets

  • Co-Delivery of online Action Learning Sets
  • Data collection and management

o   collating, managing, and organising data generated from the online Action Learning Sets

o   processing and managing data ethically and in line with GDPR requirements

  • Organising data thematically to inform the toolkit design
  • Supporting with toolkit organisation, writing, and design
  • Preparing and delivery of pilot phase

o   Prepare questionnaire to gather stakeholder feedback and/or carry out qualitative interviews

o   Support refinement of toolkit in view of feedback

  • Output preparation: contributing to academic outputs and the Research Assistant will, of course, be listed as an author on any written outputs.

To apply, you should have experience of qualitative data analysis, developing questionnaires/interviewing, and experience of writing up project findings (preferably for peer-reviewed publication). An understanding about domestic abuse is essential. An interest in the area of perpetration, neurodiversity (social model), and domestic abuse interventions would be beneficial but not essential.

You should submit via Taleo a CV (max. two pages), a brief cover letter (max. 1 page), and a sample of academic writing (max. 2 pages) which demonstrate your suitability for the role.
